The Stepping Stones Youth Home is an initiative driven by an advisory committee comprised of business, community members, youth, community service agencies and government. The need for a youth home was recognized after a May 2007 survey revealed 65 youth self identified as living on the street, in an unsafe or temporary housing situation or in danger of losing their housing. The Stepping Stones Youth Home advisory committee works under the Homelessness Initiatives Steering Committee (HISC). The Stepping Stones Youth Home advisory committee identified a need for a youth home in Fort McMurray, and contacted Wood's Homes, a non-profit Calgary based organization with almost 100 years experience working with children, youth, and their families The stepping stones youth home is a 7-bed home proposed for the Dickinsfield neighbourhood. The home will offer emergency and transitional beds along with wrap around supports and services for youth and their families. The proposed operator, Wood's Homes, will work with youth and their families (where appropriate) to ensure participation in school or work and support services such as mediation, counselling, or treatment, An outreach-van will connect youth to services as well as meet youth in high risk situations to provide for their basic, immediate needs.
The vision of the Stepping Stones Youth Home initiative is "Every Youth Deserves a Safe and Healthy Place to Live".
